ZixCorp Applauds President's Push for Healthcare IT and e-Prescribing; Statement from John Ryan, CEO and chairman for ZixCorp

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 3, 2005--Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure e-messaging, e-prescribing, and e-transaction applications and services, announced that John Ryan, chairman and chief executive officer for ZixCorp made the following statement today in regards to President Bush's State of the Union address:

"Zix Corporation strongly supports the Bush administration's push toward better, safer, more accessible and affordable healthcare through the use of technology. Both the president's State of the Union address and his recently released call to action, "Improving Care and Saving Lives Through Health IT," support improvements in healthcare efficiency, including the use of information technology to prevent medical errors and defray needless costs.

"In the president's Jan. 27 call to action, the statement addresses e-prescribing, citing the improvement this technology provides in the quality and safety of patient care, and the ways in which the accelerated adoption of e-prescribing in Medicare will help make electronic health records a standard throughout the nation's healthcare system.

"As the healthcare community looks to technologies to advance the president's call to action, ZixCorp looks forward to supporting the efforts through continued focus on its e-prescribing application, which has proven to improve patient safety, generate office efficiencies, and reduce costs.

"The use of e-prescribing supports the president's call to use information technology to reduce costs and improve efficiencies in the following ways:

  • Errors in prescription writing are reduced because illegibility is no longer an issue.
  • Physicians have information at the point-of-care, including dispensed drug history, drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy interactions, and an online drug reference guide to help them make the best decisions for the patient.
  • Significant cost savings are realized due to formulary compliance.
  • Offices are more efficient and can save up to two hours per provider per day on the prescription process thanks to a reduction in follow-up calls to the pharmacy, chart pulls, and other prescription-related tasks.

"ZixCorp continues to be a leading provider of e-prescribing and a pioneer in facilitating its adoption. With significant progress in the Massachusetts market, we have created a system that streamlines physician deployment, training, and use of our PocketScript(R) application. While patients, pharmacies, healthcare providers, and physicians are all realizing the benefits of e-prescribing today, we look forward to the expansion of e-prescribing use so that everyone can benefit from this powerful healthcare technology."
