DALLAS, Oct 26, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure e-messaging and e-prescribing solutions and services, today announced that its vice president and chief medical officer, Daniel Z. Sands, MD MPH, has been re-elected to serve as director of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) and has also been elected to become a fellow of the American College of Physicians (ACP).
AMIA is the premier organization in the United States dedicated to the development and application of medical informatics in the support of patient care, teaching, research, and health care administration. AMIA was founded in 1990 through the merger of three existing health informatics associations and has grown to more than 3,500 members from 42 countries. Sands' three-year term with the organization will begin Jan. 1, 2006.
The ACP fellowship distinction recognizes achievement in internal medicine, the specialty of adult medical care. The ACP is the second-largest physician group in the country with membership that includes over 116,000 internists, related subspecialists, and medical students.
Dr. Sands has achieved numerous industry awards as a leader in clinical computing and patient and clinician empowerment through the use of computing technology. In 1998, he received the President's Award from the AMIA in recognition of his leadership in co-authoring the first national guidelines for the use of email in patient care. In 2003, he was first elected to the board of the AMIA and in the same year was granted an IT Innovator award by Healthcare Informatics for his leadership in advancing electronic patient-centered communication. Dr. Sands is also an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and maintains a primary-care practice.
