Zix Corporation Selected by Microsoft and WellPoint for e-Prescribing Initiative

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 30, 2004--Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of e-messaging protection and transaction services, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Microsoft Corporation for the e-prescribing component of the WellPoint Health Networks Inc. physician technology initiative, part of a health initiative valued at $40 million announced by WellPoint earlier this year. Microsoft and WellPoint selected ZixCorp's proven PocketScript(TM) application, which will be offered to approximately 19,000 network physicians within WellPoint's family of companies in Georgia, California, Wisconsin, and Missouri, and will be available at a discount to the remainder of WellPoint's network physicians.

ZixCorp's PocketScript e-prescribing solution delivers real-time data, enabling physicians to easily write prescriptions that can be electronically transmitted to the pharmacy of their choice. Physicians will utilize PocketScript with Dell Axim X3i Pocket PC devices or via the convenience of a browser from any PC in their home or office. The ZixCorp solution includes point-of-care data for multiple drug formularies, customized drug lists and drug reference guides, optimized communication between doctors and pharmacies, and detailed tracking and reporting tools.

"By working with Microsoft to choose ZixCorp to provide e-prescribing technology to this initiative, WellPoint is further exhibiting its leadership role in the healthcare industry," said John Ryan, CEO and chairman of ZixCorp. "The significance for ZixCorp is that this selection reinforces and validates our unique strategy to offer solutions that electronically integrate and align payor-physician-patient interactions to improve the quality and efficiency to reduce the cost of healthcare. We have the largest active rollout of e-prescribing in Massachusetts, and with the WellPoint selection, this leadership position will extend coast-to-coast."

Additionally, ZixCorp signed an agreement to integrate WellPoint's formulary, eligibility, and medication history data directly into the PocketScript device. With this integration, ZixCorp can provide real-time eligibility confirmation and perform a drug-to-drug analysis to ensure incompatible drugs are not prescribed. ZixCorp can deliver this integration capability by leveraging its experience and world-class, $50 million SysTrust(R)-certified data center, which has the capacity, scalability, and stable infrastructure to support WellPoint's formulary, eligibility, and medication history data.

"E-prescribing has the capability to realize significant efficiencies across the healthcare industry by enabling improved communication and collaboration between healthcare workers," said Steve Shihadeh, general manager of Microsoft's Health Care and Life Sciences Group. "The combination of Microsoft's proven technology and ZixCorp's leading e-prescribing solution will deliver the increased productivity and patient safety gains that our healthcare system demands."

"Medication errors kill or cause needless suffering in many thousands of people each year," said Daniel Z. Sands, M.D., MPH, a physician with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and vice president and chief medical officer for ZixCorp. "Progressive tools like PocketScript improve medication safety, eliminate illegible prescriptions, and increase patient understanding. Because of the forward-thinking leadership of WellPoint and Microsoft, and their relationship with ZixCorp, patients may receive prescribed medications more safely."

Experts in healthcare technology echo this position, including the New England Journal of Medicine, which said in an article dated April 22, 2004, that electronic communications between physicians and patients has the potential to improve quality of care and allow them to "share knowledge, responsibility, and decision making more equally."

ZixCorp will provide further details related to this news during its quarterly earnings call scheduled Tuesday, May 4, at 5:00 p.m. ET. A live Webcast of the conference call will be available on the investor relations portion of ZixCorp's Web site at Alternatively, participants can listen to the conference call by dialing toll-free 800-901-5241 or 617-786-2963, and enter access code 81630955.
