DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 19, 2004--Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure e-messaging, e-prescribing, and e-transaction applications and services, today announced that Lahey Clinic, a nonprofit teaching hospital based in Burlington, Mass., has signed a four-year contract to deploy ZixCorp's PocketScript(TM) e-prescribing technology to an initial 650 clinicians.
The PocketScript system will enable Lahey Clinic clinicians to electronically write prescriptions and immediately transmit them to pharmacies, including Lahey hospital pharmacies, from hand-held devices or a Web browser. Training and support are included to help participants easily incorporate the system into their daily routine. PocketScript will also interface with Lahey's existing charge capture solution so that both applications can run simultaneously on the same device for greater convenience to Lahey's clinicians.
The PocketScript system creates both new and refilled prescriptions, identifies drug-to-drug interactions, and enables clinicians to review a patient's drug history while providing an electronic link to some health plans for real-time formulary coverage information. It also facilitates transmission of prescriptions to both retail and mail-order pharmacies.
"PocketScript was an excellent choice to help our clinicians create an electronic link at the point of care directly to the pharmacy," said Linda Cagle, senior vice president, support services for Lahey Clinic. "The fact that ZixCorp was flexible enough to have the program interface with our current charge capture application makes PocketScript an exciting and efficient program for our clinicians."
A portion of Lahey Clinic's PocketScript implementation costs will be subsidized by the eRx Collaborative, a program funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA) and Tufts Health Plan to provide e-prescribing technology to Massachusetts clinicians with the goal of increasing patient safety, efficiency, and accuracy of the prescription process.
"Lahey Clinic is an award-winning, nationally recognized medical center known for its leading-edge technology and superior healthcare," said Rick Spurr, president and chief operating officer for ZixCorp. "Having Lahey on board extends our reach to provide PocketScript to clinicians at the teaching hospital and to its community-based clinicians across the Boston area. Our leadership position continues to gain momentum as we build relationships with key healthcare systems across the U.S."
