Zix Corporation Selected by Eastern Connecticut Health Network for Secure e-Messaging Services

Nonprofit Health System Signs Three-Year Contract for ZixVPM(R), ZixMail(R), and ZixPort(R)

DALLAS, Apr 04, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure e-messaging, e-prescribing, and e-transaction applications and services, today announced that Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN), the nonprofit parent company of two acute-care community hospitals, Manchester Memorial Hospital and Rockville General Hospital, has signed a three-year contract for the full suite of ZixCorp's email protection services.

The network purchased ZixVPM (Virtual Private Messenger), ZixMail, and ZixPort encryption services to meet the email mandates of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) by the April deadline.

ZixVPM will enforce ECHN's email policies for 1,200 users, including a pre-configured HIPAA lexicon that automatically detects and encrypts confidential Protected Health Information (PHI) for all incoming and outgoing email. ZixMail, a desktop application, will enable 75 users to encrypt, decrypt, and exchange private and secure email on an individual basis. ZixPort will provide the ability to send messages to customers and partners regardless of their computer or messaging platforms. It is customized to the ECHN Web site's existing look and feel so it will appear as its standard offering.

"The decision of whether or not to encrypt a message can be difficult. ZixVPM eliminates that decision," said Charles Covin, vice president for information services and chief information officer for ECHN. "ZixCorp provides a trusted level of security for sensitive information that ensures protection from both sound business practice and HIPAA compliance standpoints."

Covin also indicated that because of its multiple site locations and broad connectivity to community resources, ECHN has identified the need to assure that all email transactions are transmitted under safe and secure circumstances.

Eastern Connecticut Health Network (ECHN), recently named a "Top 100 Integrated Delivery Network for 2005" by Verisys, supports two nonprofit acute-care community hospitals in the cities of Manchester and Vernon as part of a comprehensive integrated delivery system.

"Many healthcare systems, like ECHN, are taking safeguards to protect email transactions. However there are still a large number of healthcare organizations that have not taken steps to ensure patient privacy in email communication," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for ZixCorp. "Our solutions make it easy for healthcare companies to correct this issue with no disruption to productivity or user satisfaction."
