DALLAS, Jun 06, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)) (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure e-messaging, e-prescribing, and e-transaction applications and services, today announced that Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross), the state's largest health insurer, has signed a three-year contract for ZixCorp e-messaging protection services.
Blue Cross purchased ZixVPM(R) (Virtual Private Messenger) and ZixPort(R) email encryption and content filtering services to meet the privacy and security regulations of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). ZixVPM will enforce the organization's email security policies to ensure secure handling of confidential information to 4,300 users, including a pre-configured lexicon that automatically detects and encrypts protected health information (PHI). ZixPort will provide custom branding and encrypted messaging functionality to the organization's Web site.
"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota needed a secure messaging solution to be HIPAA compliant. We chose the ZixCorp solution because the lexicon technology seemed far superior to that of its competitors," said Phil Frosch, director of purchasing and vendor management for Blue Cross. "Our implementation was extremely easy and the solution is simple to modify and manage."
Blue Cross provides health coverage to over 2.6 million members, more than 1.7 million of whom live in Minnesota. The company also serves as a healthcare safety net for over 126,000 Minnesotans enrolled in government-sponsored programs, more than 172,000 individual members though its Medicare supplement programs, and an additional 140,000 Medicare members carried through employment groups. In addition, Blue Cross covers employees of more than 315 public schools and around 345 city, county, and other government agencies.
"It's exciting to have another Blues plan on board," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for ZixCorp. "We already have contracts with a significant number of the Blues -- a strong indication of the trust, reliability, and interoperability we bring to our valued customers."
