DALLAS, Jun 01, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), the leader in hosted services for email encryption and e-prescribing, today announced that the S/MIME Gateway module of its ZixVPM (Virtual Private Messenger) email encryption service has been awarded a Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
FIPS is a requirement set forth by the U.S. Government in order to ensure that encryption technology meets certain requirements within government agencies, assuring both security of those messages and interoperability. FIPS Publication 140-2, Security Requirements for Cryptographic Modules, is a U.S. security standard used to certify cryptographic modules as a prerequisite for use by government agencies.
