One-Year Outreach Pilot Program Serves Homeless
with Easier, Safer Access to Prescriptions
Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure e-messaging, e-prescribing, and e-transaction applications and services, today announced it is providing PocketScript(R) e-prescribing to the Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) in a one-year trial outreach initiative through the eRx Collaborative.
The initiative, which went live Dec. 1, enables participants to transmit prescriptions via the PocketScript application on a BlackBerry(R) wireless device or Internet browser directly to the closest pharmacy so that patients can avoid the hassles of carrying a paper script that could get lost or stolen during transit. Users include 14 clinicians, which comprises physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants working for BHCHP's Street and Family Outreach departments and the Barbara McInnis House inpatient respite care facility.
"PocketScript gives us the freedom to literally prescribe on the street," said Peter Malloy, chief information officer for BHCHP. "And with the ability to access the Massachusetts Medicaid formulary on the devices, we're assured that the drugs we prescribe are covered. It's a much more efficient way to prescribe."
Dr. Greg Wagoner, medical director for BHCHP, said, "The bottom line for us is improved patient care. Features like drug-to-drug interaction checking and access to up-to-date medication history enhance the quality of care we provide, especially for our street team and outreach clinicians."
The BHCHP pilot program is subsidized by the eRx Collaborative, a program funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Tufts Health Plan, Neighborhood Health Plan, and ZixCorp to provide e-prescribing to Massachusetts clinicians with the goal of increasing patient safety, efficiency, and accuracy of the prescription process.
"This program exhibits true mobile prescribing, which demonstrates the versatility and efficiency that PocketScript can bring," said Rick Spurr, president and chief operating officer for ZixCorp. "We're also providing a real-time link to the BHCHP's practice management system for true integration and convenience. We're excited to help out this worthy cause and demonstrate the accessibility of e-prescribing."
The mission of the BHCHP is to assure access to quality healthcare for all homeless individuals and families in the greater Boston area. The program works toward achieving this mission in two ways: by bridging the gap between medicine and public health through integration of shelters, clinics, and health centers; and by helping the healthcare system address the special needs of people who struggle with persistent poverty.
