DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 2006--Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of email encryption and e-prescribing services, today announced that it is part of a collaborative initiative created by SureScripts to help set government e-prescribing standards. SureScripts is a recipient of a $2 million grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as part of the agency's Medicare prescription drug benefit program.
The grant involves stakeholders from the healthcare community including e-prescribing vendors, pharmacies, physicians, pharmacy benefits managers, and payors. The initiative is designed to test the effectiveness of new, proposed e-prescribing standards. ZixCorp's PocketScript users in Massachusetts and New Jersey will participate. As a requirement under the Medicare Modernization Act, the results of this grant will be evaluated by HHS and submitted in a report to Congress. Based on the outcome, HHS will adopt the final uniform e-prescribing standards to enhance the value of e-prescribing.
"We are pleased to be part of this collaborative effort with SureScripts to test these standards and provide real-world validation based on our physician users," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for ZixCorp. "Both HHS Secretary Leavitt and CMS Administrator McClellan have endorsed the wide-spread use of e-prescribing, especially with the start of the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Benefit this year. This grant will further enable the public and private sectors to work together to facilitate widespread expansion. We're excited that ZixCorp can be in a leadership position to bring our proven model of e-prescribing success to the table, leverage our existing customers, and provide our expertise to positively impact the quality and efficiency of health care in the United States."
