Physician e-Prescription Technology Debuts in Connecticut

FARMINGTON, Conn. and DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 2003--

Grove Hill Doctors, ConnectiCare, ZixCorp Partner to Launch Pilot Program to Increase Convenience for Patients, Efficiency for Physicians, and Reduce Chance of Error in Prescription Filling

Handwritten prescriptions on those little white physician note pads may soon become a thing of the past in Connecticut thanks to a new handheld electronic device which offers physicians precise medical information and e-prescribing convenience while expediting the process of filling prescribed drugs for patients.

Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(TM)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of e-messaging protection and transaction services, together with Farmington-based managed care company, ConnectiCare, have launched a one year pilot program to provide its PocketScript e-prescribing solution to physicians at New Britain's Grove Hill Medical Center, the largest independent multi-specialty healthcare clinic in the state of Connecticut.

PocketScript will enable Grove Hill Medical Center physicians to create electronic prescriptions more efficiently than the traditional paper-based version. The system enables physicians to identify drug-to-drug interactions and review a patient's drug history, while providing an electronic link to retail and mail-order pharmacies.

"We are very excited to begin piloting ZixCorp's e-prescribing solution, PocketScript," said Earle Sittambalam M.D., president of Grove Hill Medical Center. "We know that e-prescribing can improve the care of our patients by reducing errors, improving productivity, and decreasing cost. In the end, we will be able to provide better care to our patients -- which is always what we strive to do," Sittambalam explained.

The PocketScript e-prescribing device also includes an enhanced feature that instantaneously retrieves patient information previously entered by staff members via a two-way computer interface with IDX, Grove Hill's practice management system. Once a patient's record is retrieved on the hand-held, the physician can check the patient's prescription insurance coverage by ConnectiCare, or other insurance companies.

The integration of Grove Hill's practice management system and PocketScript will drive operational improvements and potentially save out-of-pocket cost for patients.

"Instant access to patient information is a significant development in the prescribing process," said Paul Bluestein MD, chief medical officer for ConnectiCare. "E-prescribing enables doctors to prescribe the most appropriate drugs, and also reduces unnecessary phone waiting time between a doctor's office and pharmacies. More than that, it is an important step forward in improving patient safety."

"This e-prescribing system serves as a safety net for patients," said Alex Krikorian RPh, MBA, manager of pharmacy services at ConnectiCare. "Physicians will recognize the value of this system which eliminates the potential for misinterpreted prescription medication errors, and potentially dangerous drug interactions. That's exactly what PocketScript does."

"This pilot program helps to demonstrate that PocketScript is viable in physicians' offices of all sizes and capabilities -- in offices with or without a practice management system or electronic medical record capabilities," said Daniel S. Nutkis, vice president, Care Delivery Solutions at ZixCorp. "We are glad to see ConnectiCare and Grove Hill taking such an active approach to improving overall efficiencies."
