DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2006--Zix Corporation (ZixCorp(R)), (Nasdaq:ZIXI), a global provider of secure email encryption and e-prescribing services, today announced that its PocketScript e-prescribing service has been certified as one of the vendors to participate in the Highmark eHealth Collaborative, a new venture that was created to forward the adoption of health information technology to improve patient safety.
The Highmark eHealth Collaborative, which operates as a charitable fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation, was established through a $26.5 million contribution from Highmark Inc., one of the nation's largest health insurers. The collaborative pays up to 75 percent of the cost for a physician's office to acquire, install, and implement an e-prescribing system up to a maximum of $7,000 per physician. Western and Central Pennsylvania physicians are eligible to apply for grant funding from the collaborative.
PocketScript will enable participating physicians to write prescriptions electronically and send them directly to pharmacies through either a wireless handheld PDA or a secure Web site. The application includes formulary information, a drug reference guide, drug-to-drug and drug-to-allergy checking, and patient-specific drug-dispensed lists. PocketScript provides greater legibility, improved communication for greater patient safety, lower costs, and improved office efficiency.
"Zix Corporation is proud to participate in this new program that will increase patient safety with cost-efficient health information technology. We hope to add thousands of prescribers in Pennsylvania to our list of satisfied, productive users in Massachusetts, New Jersey and Philadelphia," said Rick Spurr, chief executive officer for Zix Corporation. "Highmark is one of the three prospective payors I referenced in my recent update with which we were in late-stage discussions. I'll provide the progress of these discussions, as well as an update to the fourth payor contract that is still underway, and discuss details about the recruitment and deployment efforts for this Highmark initiative during our investor call next month."
